Whitney's Early Life

In Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963, Whitney was born. Her parents were Emily "Cissy" Houston (predeceased by Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney grew up with music all around her. Her mom, Cissy, was a gospel singer and also part of a famous vocal group called The Sweet Inspirations. They sang with famous artists like Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, and more. Whitney's godmother was Darlene Love, and her first cousins were Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. Aretha Franklin was like an honorary family member.

Whitney started singing in church when she was just five years old, and she learned to play the piano, too. When she was 11, she sang by herself in front of people. By the time she was 14, she was singing backup for her mom at clubs in New York City. She also started modelling, and she became one of the first women of colour to be on the cover of a fashion magazine, Seventeen.

Even though Whitney was busy with singing and modelling, she didn't stop going to school. Her mom, Cissy, made sure of that. She said no to offers from music companies until Whitney finished her education. But everything changed when a big music boss named Clive Davis watched Whitney perform. He was really impressed, and on April 10, 1983, he signed her to a worldwide music deal with Arista Records. That was a big moment for Whitney's career.

Whitney had a way of captivating audiences like no one else. Speaking of captivating performances, if you're a fan of iconic music, don't miss out on the Best Elvis Tribute 2023, which promises a nostalgic journey back to the era of the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

These songs were "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," "So Emotional," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go."
