A Brief History of Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield was the professional stage name for Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien OBE. A British pop and soul singer who was current and recording music during the 1950s through until the 1990s.
Dusty was born in West Hampstead North London and had strong musical influences at her family home, she learned to sing at home and her singing was avidly encouraged.
After finishing her schooling Dusty formed a duo with her brother Tom and they sang together in local venues; they went on to work together at holiday camps.
Her launch into professional singing came when she responded to an advertisement in the weekly theatrical newspaper The Stage, and she joined The Lana Sisters 1958. Two years further on she formed her own pop vocal trio, The Springfield along with her brother Tom.
She launched her solo career with the highly successful pop song “I Only Want To Be With You”, amongst her other chart hit successes was: “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”, “Son of A Preacher Man”, “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” and “Wishin’ and Hopin”.
She shared her success and helped to promote many American pop music artists to her own loyal UK audience in 1965, by hosting The Soul and Motown Show which presented the first national TV performances of many top-selling Tamla Motown artists. Whilst not ever categorized as a Northern Soul act herself, she did a great deal to form, promote and establish the genre.
Resulting in part from her help and supportive attitude to contemporary musicians, she was rewarded and recognised as the best-selling female act in the world. She was honoured and bestowed accolades by several major and highly respected music publications including Melody Maker who named her Best Female Vocalist and she topped the New Musical Express’readers’ poll for Female Singer, the very first UK singer to achieve the honour.
Dusty had a very distinctive recording voice best described as Mezzo-Soprano, influenced by and eventually becoming prominent in the blue-eyed soul genre, she was considered one of the most successful British female artists at the peak of her highly successful career, having achieved a total of sixteen hit singles in the UK and eighteen top singes on the USA Billboard 100 chart including six top 20 singles.
Eager to promote herself as a credible soul artist, she went to Memphis Tennessee to record her album Dusty in Memphis with Atlantic Records. The album received rave reviews and credits worldwide. It is still regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time by the American magazine Rolling Stone, readers of The New Musical Express and viewers of Channel 4.
Springfield was inducted into both the UK rock and Roll Hall of Fame and its equivalent American counterpart organization.
The early 80s saw a bit of a career hiatus for Dusty but she returned in 1987 with a song produced in collaboration with The Pet Shop Boys and seized top 10 positionings with “What Have I Done To Deserve This?” The success was followed by a further two solo single efforts “In Private” and “Nothing Has Been Proved”, were both big hit songs for her and again in the mid 1990s, an older recording “Son of a Preacher Man” received a re-surge in interest due to its inclusion as the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
She is considered amongst the very top few female rock singers of all time and she carved herself a permanent niche as an iconic figure and celebrity entertainer of the swinging sixties.
